- Board certification in a primary
or specialty area indicates that the physician has met
national standards of care and knowledge. Board
certification is obtained after completing an
accredited residency, taking a standardized test, and
maintaining knowledge in the area of medicine for
recertification. Additionally the American Board of
Family Medicine does chart review for chronic illness
management and treatment to make sure standards are
met nationally, such as with Asthma, CHF, Diabetes,
and Hypertension. You do not have to be board
certified to be on staff at the local hospitals. Who
are some examples of area primary care doctors who are
not board certified?

Surprisingly many "specialists" in the area are not
board certified.

- I see my own patients, when they
are admitted to either Belleville Hospital. Being
listed as on staff at a hospital does not mean your
doctor will care for you when you are sick in the
hospital. The following doctors or practices have
eliminated their inpatient care or only go to one
hospital:
- In O'Fallon, Drs. David McCarthy,
Donald Clark, Donna Wagstaff, and Scott Morrison
practice outpatient medicine and do not see inpatients
at either Belleville Hospital. Referring you to a
specialist means they will not see at the hospital,
and you will see a hospitalist.
- In O'Fallon Drs. Hennon and
Reinert also practice outpatient medicine and do not
go to either Belleville Hospital.
- In the metro east, Drs. Roberto
Collantes, Deatrice Kellogg, Paul Malcharek, and
Beatriz Ramos-Pardo do not admit their own patients
and do not directly see their own patients at either
hospital.
- As of 12/20/09 the
following doctors quit going to St. Elizabeth's
Hospital: Drs. Jennifer
Follwell, Don Manarang, Salma Mannan-Hilaly, Ellen
Middendorf, David Rawdon, and Christopher Schenewerk.
Some of these doctors did their residency training at
St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
- Dr. Robert Farmer and Dr. Jon
Cumberledge do not go to either Belleville Hospital.
Their insurance does not allow them to see patients
inside St. Clair Country, which saves each of them
around $10,000 a year.
- Drs. Hageman and Shawahin
discontinued admitting patients to St. Elizabeth's
Hospital of Belleville.
- Almost any primary care doctor
with the Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation only
sees outpatients. The few who see inpatients do not
come to the Belleville hospitals, with four exceptions
in internal medicine and ob/gyn.
- Any of the residency doctors and
most family practice doctors who have offices on 180
South Third Street or 311 West Lincoln in Belleville
do not go to Belleville Memorial Hospital.
